CAREY WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 2024 S1 WEEK 4

Farewell, Tanya!

This week, we said farewell to a remarkable individual from our Carey community, Tanya Lameta. Tanya is moving into a new role with Emerge Aotearoa, an organisation that provides a wide variety of services to help communities thrive. Her presence will deeply be missed, as her time with us, first as a student and then as a staff member, has left an indelible mark. Tanya has contributed to our lives and ministry in countless ways—imparting wisdom, spreading warmth, sharing her culture and culinary skills, leading in worship, and showering grace to us all. She personifies Carey, and her essence will forever be inseparable from who we aim to be. We will miss you immensely, Tanya.

Going forward

Eugene, as the primary contact for Māori and Pasifika students, along with the library staff, will continue to provide support for all students at Carey. If you need anything, talk to Eugene, Anna, Mei Ling, or Siong in the library. We’ve got you!

Need an Extension?

If you are worried about getting your assessments done in time and would like to request an extension, please contact Neroli Hollis, and complete an Application for Extension form.

Easter Schedule Changes

There are a few changes in our routine at Carey because of Easter this year, so let's walk through them together.

Everything runs as usual from Monday, 25 March to Thursday, 28 March.
Then, we take a break for Good Friday, 29 March, and will be closed until Tuesday, 2 April.
We're back on Wednesday, 3 April, but with a twist—no classes.
The week of 8 April will bring us back to our regular schedule.

And guess what's next? Study and Reading weeks are coming up, starting from 15 April until 3 May.

Here’s the day-by-day schedule for the next two weeks:

Want to be a Peer Writing Assistant?

One of the support mechanisms we offer at Carey is a Peer Writing Assistants (PWA) programme. If you are a second or third year student with strong academic writing, and a love for supporting other students, then being a PWA may be for you!

We are looking for three or four students to upskill in peer writing support. If you are interested in finding out more, please
email Rob Ayres, Academic Director.

Tuesday Karakia from 11.15am

This week, Jonny shared the word with us at karakia, and it was epic. We are looking forward to hearing from Michael next week, so come along at 11.15am on Tuesday.

Karakia recordings are now available!

We’ve got Jonny’s talk up on the karakia recordings page, along with those from the first three weeks. Check out the karakia recordings now!

The Library

The library will be closed, just like the rest of Carey, from Friday, 29 March through Tuesday, 2 April.

Otherwise, it’s business as usual with Mei Ling, Anna, and Siong keen to help you get your resources, answer questions, and be around for support as you study. Flick them an email, give them a call (09 526 0347), or stop by whenever you need them.

Monday to Thursday: 8.30am–6.30pm
Friday, 29 March: CLOSED
Monday and Tuesday, 1-2 April: CLOSED
Wednesday and Thursday, 3-4 April: 8.30am-6.30pm
Friday, 5 April: 9am-5pm

Academic Committee Representatives

Herman and Moana (pictured above) are the wonderful students representing you as the Student Academic Representatives on Academic Committee. The committee meets once every four to six weeks during the year, and the student reps attend to participate in the discussions, evaluation, and monitoring of all academic processes and policies here at Carey. They are your voice in a critical space that affects all our students.

If you have any feedback or ideas about how to make studying at Carey even better than it is, feel free to email
Herman or Moana or chat to them if you see them around.

Community Time and Kai!

If you’re an on-site student, don’t miss our times to gather around for great kai and even better kōrero with one another on Mondays and Tuesdays. The baked potatoes last week were so yum!

Coffee, Cake, and Convo Monday at 12.15pm

Tuesday Lunch after karakia at 12.15pm (Gospel of John students on clean-up)

First Steps Deadline Next Week!

The deadline to complete First Steps is Thursday, 28 March, so, get to it if you haven’t completed the course yet.

All First Steps Videos available online

If you've already explored the First Steps resource in another term, you might remember how useful the videos were. These comprehensive guides are available for your perusal at any time. One particular recommendation is the Referencing a Book video, which will come in handy for those assessments!

Sweet Apparel for your Wardrobe

Have you been to the lobby lately? If you have, you’ll have noticed a sweet display of Carey merch. It’s brown, orange, black, white, and awesome. Beanies, t-shirts, and hoodies could be yours, and you could quite literally be the coolest person around. What will you choose? Maybe one of each!

T-shirts: $30
Hoodies: $65
Beanies: $15

Please pay at the library. Also, we accept EFTPOS or bank transfer for merchandise, photocopying, and pretty much everything else. No cash? No problem—it’s actually easier for us!
