In chapel on Tuesday, we reflected on the epic contest between Yahweh and Baal on Mt Carmel (1 Kings 18). If you’re like me, you look at Ahab and the Israelites and wonder how they could be so silly as to worship a false god like Baal. But we worship false gods all the time. John Calvin said, “The human heart is an idol factory.” We give the love and allegiance of our hearts to things that we shouldn’t. And one of our challenges, as God’s people, is to identify those idols. So how can we identify the idols hidden in our heart?

In his little book Counterfeit Gods, Tim Keller offers some really helpful suggestions. One way, he says, is to look at our imagination. Archbishop William Temple once said, “Your religion is what you do with your solitude.” In other words, the true god of your heart is what your thoughts effortlessly go to when there is nothing else demanding your attention. What occupies your mind when you have nothing else to think about? Is it some material possession? Some relationship? Your appearance? Your reputation? That might be an idol.

Another way to discern your heart’s idols is to look at how you spend your money. Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there is your heart also.” (Matt 6:21). Our money flows effortlessly toward our heart’s greatest love. And the mark of an idol is that you often spend too much money on it. What’s that for you? Your clothing? Your car? Your home? Your children?

Thirdly, Keller suggests that we look at our most uncontrollable emotions: “Just as a fisherman looking for fish knows to go where the water is turbulent, look for your idols at the bottom of your most painful emotions, especially those that never seem to lift and that drive you to do things you know are wrong.”

If you’re angry, ask yourself, “Is there something here too important to me, something I must have at all costs.”
If you’re fearful, ask yourself, “Am I so scared, because something in my life is being threatened that I think is a necessity, when it’s not?”
If you’re despondent, ask yourself, “Am I so despairing because I’ve lost something or failed at something that I think is critical to my life?”
If you’re overworking, driving yourself into the ground with frantic activity, ask yourself, “Do I feel that I must have this thing, or achieve this result, to be fulfilled and significant?”

Keller says that when you ask questions like this, when you “pull your emotions up by the roots,” you’ll often find your idols clinging to them. In my experience, he’s right. Your imagination. Your money. Your emotions. Why not take some time in prayer this coming week, and look in these three places? The Lord alone is God, and he wants to free us from the idols that enslave us.

End of Semester

A reminder that next week Tuesday, is the last Karakia for Semester One. It is also the last day for Tuesday classes and the last community lunch of the semester.

As Monday is King’s Birthday, Carey will be closed and there will be no classes. This means that for the following couple of weeks there will be catch up classes on Mondays. These are as follows:

Monday 8 June — Pentateuch, Christian Spirituality, Intro to the NT, and Humanity & Hope
Monday 15 June — Christian Spirituality, Intro to the NT, and Humanity & Hope

The end of the semester is 19 June. Contact Neroli if landing at that date is going to be an issue – the normal extension period changes with the end of the semester.

Reminder about Due Dates and Extensions

This is just a friendly reminder to check the due dates for assessments, and plan accordingly.

Assessments handed in up to one week after the due date are marked with 10% late penalty; assessments handed in between 7-14 days are marked pass/fail. Assessments handed in after the two-week period normally are not marked and receive a fail grade. So, be on time!

If you need an extension, please talk to your teacher and Neroli, and complete an application along with evidence of your valid reason for an extension.

At Carey, we love the bible. We are a Bible college after all! But sometimes bible stories can be confusing, weird, or downright distressing. We are working through the “Prophets and Kings” series at Karakia chapel on Tuesdays, and this week I delved into a story that was all of those things. The first story in 1 Kings 14 paints a vulgar and graphic picture of the consequences of turning away from God. The prophet declares that King Jereboam’s dynasty will be burned up like a heap of dung, and Jereboam’s Kingdom will be shamefully decimated, all due to their shocking idolatry. The prophet also says to the unnamed, unheard, unseen wife of Jereboam that her son will die as soon as she returns to her house. It’s an awful story. We imagined how it must’ve felt to be this woman, hearing this news, and not being able to do anything about it. Without giving too much of the sermon away (have a listen to the CareyOPEN podcast once it comes out), we discover that compromise has consequences. But also, like a stone thrown into a river, compromise has ripple effects, and often it’s ordinary people who get hurt. Think of war. Think of cases of abuse. Think of those who live in countries ruled by oppressive governments. Often it’s the ordinary people who suffer, due to the compromise of others.

I challenge you to take a read of 1 Kings 14, and try to imagine yourself into the story. Try to feel the grief, the darkness. Consider your own griefs, your own time of darkness. Remember that we have King Jesus, the Prince of Peace, but allow yourself to feel what the ordinary people of Kings might have felt. What is the story saying to you today?

As we reach the end of Week 11, we hope you are all doing well as assignments, readings, and the semester pace continue to build! It has been another full and encouraging week around campus, including Tuesday’s Open Day where it was great to welcome guests who are considering studying at Carey and give them a glimpse into life in our community.

At Karakia this week, it was also a privilege to hear reflections from those who attended the Noho Marae. Thank you to Tania and Milla for sharing so thoughtfully with us — your stories gave us all a richer appreciation for the experience and learning that took place.

Assessments

As we move toward the end of semester, now is a good time to make sure you have a clear plan in place for completing your assessments. Take some time to check all your due dates, map out what still needs to be done, and think carefully about how you will manage your workload over the coming weeks. Remember, the semester officially ends on Friday 19 June, and all assessments must be submitted by then, even if you have been granted an extension.
A reminder also about late penalties: assessments submitted up to one week late receive a 10% penalty, while assessments submitted 7–14 days late are marked on a pass/fail basis only. Work submitted more than two weeks after the due date will normally not be marked and will receive a fail grade. Planning ahead now will help reduce stress later and give you the best opportunity to finish the semester well.

Graduation 2026

Graduation is a time to celebrate with your peers, the faculty, and your friends and family. And it’s coming up soon! Everyone is welcome to come along 🙂

Understanding obstacles to theological study and testing solutions
Steve Taylor is conducting research and wants to talk to Carey Baptist College students about their experience of theological study. He is particularly keen to listen across different cultural contexts and diverse experiences. The research is for Longview Trust to understand the obstacles to theological training—any level (diploma, degree, postgraduate)—and test some practical scholarship solutions. The research is confidential, and a $50 gift voucher is offered to every student who participates. This could be 1-1 for 20-25 minutes. Or with a group of “study buddies.” It could be by phone or Zoom.

Back to the classroom!

We know it wasn’t a break, but we missed our regular lecture schedule over the Study and Reading weeks, and we missed seeing many of you in classroms and online.

So, we are looking forward to getting back to our normal schedule, and hopefully you are too. You've been hard at work, crushing those assessments, reading, and studying. Hopefully you did a bit of resting too.

Time to study and read!

Maybe you aren’t sitting in warm weather on a beach somewhere, but hopefully you’re making the most of these precious weeks. We're through the first of our Study and Reading weeks, which continue for another two weeks. As a reminder, normal on-site, synchronous courses will not take place during this time.

Also, weekly karakia and community lunches will not take place until week 10, beginning Tuesday, 28 April (Carey is closed for ANZAC Day observance on Monday, 27 April). Library hours will remain the same.

Assessment prep and AI declaration

“Keep your head up,” “don’t freak out,” “keep calm,” “believe in yourself,” and all the other platitudes out there are well and good, but there are deadlines, and sometimes it’s easy to panic. But, we’ve got your back and are here for you. And we actually mean those things! There’s the 10 Essentials to help you with details, and our support staff are still around and keen as to help you as you go.

So before you start to lose your mind, give us a shout. And, if you’ve already begun to lose your mind, give us a shout anyway. We can help you get it back.

AI declaration requirement

Don’t forget this critical requirement! FOR EVERY ASSESSMENT, you MUST submit a cover sheet and AI declaration. Your lecturers should go over this with you, and the cover page can be found in the Assessments tab of your course page or the link above. Do not forget to submit this REQUIRED form with your assessments.

We’re studying, we’re reading

It’s time for Study and Reading weeks, so until Friday, 24 April, regular classes will pause. Our weekly karakia and community lunches will also take a break. You'll likely be working hard on assessments and maybe even getting ahead on ones to come! Also, be sure to check your course on CareyOnline for any guided learning happening.

But we hope you can also take time to let the content you are learning about from your lectures take root and transform you. As you work, we pray you grow closer to Jesus and use this time to breathe a bit.

Holiday schedule

With Easter and ANZAC Day, Carey (including the library) will be closed periodically during the next few weeks. See below for details:

Friday, 3 April (Good Friday) – Closed
Saturday, 4 April – Library closed
Monday, 6 April – Closed
Tuesday, 7 April – Closed
Saturday, 25 April (ANZAC Day) - Library closed
Monday, 27 April (ANZAC observance) - Closed

Aside from the days listed above, campus will remain open over the Study and Reading weeks, and staff will be working as usual. If you need support or have questions at any point, give us a shout.

Be sure you are planning accordingly with assessments nearing. Set out enough time beforehand to get your research together, create an assessment calendar, and above all, make sure you’ve looked at the 10 Essentials. If you are relatively new to study or have been away for a while, these will make your life SO MUCH easier. If you’re a seasoned pro, there’s still probably something in there that’ll help.

Upcoming Study and Reading Weeks

We’ve already reached the end of Week 5. Can you believe it? With only two more teaching weeks before we enter our Study and Reading period (Weeks 7–9), this is a good moment to take stock of how far you’ve come.

Between Friday, 3 April (Good Friday) and Friday, 24 April, regular classes will pause (except for any block courses scheduled during that time). Our weekly karakia and community lunches will also take a break. This three‑week stretch is intentionally set aside to give you room to concentrate, catch up, and deepen your understanding as you work toward your assessments.

Here are a few ways to make the most of this time:

Re‑engage with readings and course content
Make progress on assignments
Get yourself ready for the final phase of the semester

The campus will remain open, and staff will be working as usual throughout Study and Reading weeks. However, please note that Carey—including the library—will be closed for Easter from Friday, 3 April through Tuesday, 7 April.

We’ll be back in the classroom in Week 10, starting Tuesday, 27 April (since campus is closed for ANZAC Day on Monday, 26 April). If you need support or have questions at any point, give us a shout.

Study and Reading Weeks approaching

It’s the end of Week 4 already—well done for crushing it so far! There are only two weeks of teaching before we move into our Study and Reading weeks in Weeks 7–9.

From Friday, 3 April (Good Friday) to Friday, 24 May, there will be no regular classes (other than scheduled block courses), and no weekly karakia or community lunches. This three‑week window is designed to give you space to focus, catch up, deepen your learning, and get your head around your assessments.

Use this time intentionally:

Make progress on assignments
Revisit readings and course materials
Prepare yourself for the final stretch

While campus is open, and staff work regularly during Study and Reading weeks, Carey will be closed (including the library) for Easter from Friday, 3 April through Tuesday, 7 April.

Classes resume in Week 10 on Tuesday, 27 April (Monday, 26 April is ANZAC Day, and campus is closed). If you have any questions or need support, don’t hesitate to reach out to your teachers or any of our staff—we’re here to help you thrive.

Centenary Week—Carey is turning 100!

This month we celebrate 100 years of God’s faithfulness to Carey Baptist College, and we will be partying all week long. If you’re on campus, there will be special moments throughout next week to mark the occasion.

Our Centenary event, held next Friday and Saturday, 20-21 March will cap off the week with times of worship, plenary talks, workshops led by current Carey faculty, a panel conversation with past and present principals, and a special centenary chapel service.

Registration is closed, but if you are planning to be on campus during the event, you will be able to access the library. But please note that campus will be busy, and the carpark will have limited access. We encourage you to use public transportation if you are able. If you registered for the event, we look forward to seeing you!

What do you think about classes? A survey

This week we sent an email to your personal email about how you are experiencing us using Microsoft Teams at Carey. Since this is a new way of doing things, we want to know how you’re going and what you think of things.

Referencing tutorial from Student Support

If you are new to study, this is a great place to get some info and ask good questions about upcoming assessments. Ko Levi Dyer ahau. It is such a blessing and privilege to be your student president this year.

My role is to represent your student voice, and to encourage community both on campus and online. With the Student Association (SASS) we are keen to organise events and initiatives for both on campus and for our online students.

One easy way to be a part of what is happening in our community is by joining our newly launched Students WhatsApp. This is an opt-in group platform with both an announcements page (Account phone number is hidden) and group chat that is moderated by SASS (Account phone number visible).

As you know, we have created Microsoft Office365 accounts for you, and you now have single sign-on capabilities across Outlook, the Library, CareyOnline, and Teams. Yay!

Teams is where we host our lecture recordings, and if you have been wondering, “What is class going to look like?” or “How do I view my lecture recordings?” we’ve got just the thing for you!

Here is a tipsheet that will get you started on how to access your class meetings and recordings. Take a look at it, and you should be sweet for starting next week. Your lecturers will give you more information along the way, but you can always contact our team for more.

We’re excited about another new semester of growing together—learning more about God, deepening relationships with one another, and discovering new things about ourselves along the way. You might be stepping into this season with excitement, or perhaps a bit of uncertainty about where the road leads. Wherever you find yourself, our prayer is that you will sense God’s leading and notice the ways you are being formed along the way.

We’re here to walk with you as you go, so read on for a few helpful reminders to support you in the weeks ahead.

Is your enrolment sorted?

As the term begins, it’s wise to take a moment and make sure everything looks right with your enrolment. Check your Student Portal to confirm you’re enrolled in the correct course and level. If something doesn’t look quite right, reach out to Neroli—she’s wonderful and will help get things sorted quickly.

Have you heard of The Code?

The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021—which we simply call The Code—sets out NZQA’s expectations for how schools like Carey support your wellbeing, development, and educational success. We’ve put people and processes in place to care for you well in each of these areas. You can learn more about it on our Compliance and Reporting page.

Library Team

Our Library team, Siong Ng and Mei Ling Lee can assist you with library resources, referencing for assessments, and general assessment skills. They are extremely delightful and always keen to help.

Student Support Advisors

Denise Tims and Jarrahmal Tanielu are your Student Support Advisors. Denise has a primary responsibility for connecting with and supporting Māori students, while Jarrahmal will have primary responsibility for supporting our Pasifika students and distance students. Both of them will also provide wider support for all students in partnership with our wonderful library support team.

Academic Registrar

If you haven’t met Neroli Hollis yet, you are missing out. She is your first port of call for just about anything, handling administrative enquiries, including CareyOnline, enrolment, and course planning. Neroli also supports international students and students with disabilities. Oh, and she’s always got chocolates, so if you come on-site, there is yet another reason to see her.
