We’ve made it to the final week of Study and Reading Weeks! We hope this time has given you space to make good progress on your assignments, catch up on reading, and prepare for the weeks ahead. We’re excited to see everyone’s faces back in classes next week as we head into the final stretch of the semester.

A reminder, too, that the CGS Research Conference is happening this Thursday, 10 September, featuring presentations from some of our own postgraduate students. It’s a great opportunity to hear about the research happening within our Carey community. Read on to find out how you can attend.

CGS Reseach Conference & Dinner

Join us Thursday 10 September for a day of research, scholarship and theological reflection at Carey. Hear presentations from postgraduate students and faculty exploring topics relevant to the church, ministry and wider society.

We’re now into our second week of Study and Reading Weeks—hopefully you’ve had a chance to settle into a good rhythm and make some progress on your assignments and reading. With another couple of weeks before classes resume, now is a good time to check in on your workload, keep an eye on upcoming deadlines, and make use of the support available to you.

If you’re feeling stuck or need some help with an assessment, remember that Student Support is here for you. Don’t hesitate to reach out and make the most of this time to get the support you need.

Keep going, take regular breaks, and look after yourself as you work towards the end of semester. We’re cheering you on!

Over the past month, Carey students in Ōtautahi-Christchurch and Tāmaki Makaurau-Auckland have gathered to just simply catch up and get to know other fellow students over a free cuppa and kai, shouted by Carey's Student Association.

CGS Reseach Conference & Celebration of Scholarship Dinner |10 September

Join us on Thursday 10 September for a day celebrating research, scholarship, and theological reflection at Carey. The Carey Graduate School Research Conference will feature presentations from postgraduate students and faculty, showcasing current research and exploring topics relevant to the church, ministry, and wider society.

Current Carey students can attend the conference free of charge by registering with the discount code STUDENT. Whether you're considering postgraduate study, interested in academic research, or simply keen to engage with new ideas, this is a great opportunity to be part of the conversation.

Today marks the beginning of our Study and Reading Weeks. With no scheduled classes for the next three weeks, this is a valuable opportunity to focus on assignments, prepare for assessments, catch up on reading, and make progress towards the end of semester.

Remember that Student Support is available to help you during this time, particularly if you need guidance with assessments, assignments or study planning. Don’t wait until you’re stuck — reach out early and make use of the support available to you.

Celebrating a Carey Legend

We want to let students know that Siong Ng has resigned from her role as Carey's Library Manager, with her final day at Carey being 11 September 2026.

Siong has been indicating to the team that she was considering a change for a while now, so with the completion of two significant projects: the relocation of the Carey Library to Te Whare Tōtara and the implementation of our new Library Management System, after more than 17 years of faithful service, Siong has decided that the time is right to begin a new chapter.

It is difficult to overstate Siong’s contribution to the life of Carey. Through her leadership of the library, her care for students, her commitment to excellence, and her willingness to serve wherever needed, she has enriched the experience of countless students, staff, and graduates over many years.

There will be opportunities in the coming weeks to thank Siong and celebrate her remarkable service. In the meantime, please join us in expressing our gratitude for her faithfulness, friendship, and commitment to the Carey community. While we will miss her greatly, we are excited for her as she begins this next chapter.

Hi everyone, Pope Leo XIV has just published the first encyclical of his papacy, Magnifica Humanitas, or “On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence.” Such encyclicals form the foundation for what is known as Catholic Social Teaching (CST), a “body of thought on social issues that has been developed” by the Catholic church “over the past hundred years.” While perhaps nobody on this list is Roman Catholic, I consider CST to be an incredibly thoughtful, helpful resource for thinking about how the good news about Jesus lands in our world today (check out the 9 core principles above).

Haere mai. Welcome to Mission Week!

Whether you are on campus or joining us from afar, we want to invite you to set some time aside this week to reflect on God's mission. Where is God inviting you to participate and how can you respond faithfully? This year we are delighted to again be partnering with Arotahi, our Baptist missions whānau. We have provided some resources below to help you understand a bit more about the work and prayerfully consider where God is moving in your own life. If you are onsite, we have set these resources up as 'story spots' for you to engage with, but we didn't want those of you offsite to miss out! We really encourage you to set some time aside to sit with God as you consider these.

If you sense God is prompting you to consider things further, Annie and Emma are always happy to chat and pray for and with you.

Giving God Your Yes

"Here I stand, the servant of the Lord, let it be to me according to your word"
Luke 1:38

God first said “yes” to us through the act of creation: by giving us life and the blessing of His presence and spirit. Our “yes” to God is always a response to what God is already doing. Whether we have said “yes” in the past or whether this is our first time, our response is always in the present tense. It is worked out and lived out each day through our decisions, motives, comments and actions.

We know that we are all made to be a part of the mission of God. This Mission Week we want to draw your attention to discerning where God is leading you.

This week would you consider where God is asking to you say ‘yes’.

God,

You, who first spoke Yes, are the One who breathed life into being.

You, who drew close, spoke to Mary, calling her to bear your hope into the world. Teach me to listen to the movement of your Spirit, and to walk humbly in your ways, so that I too may say Yes, echoing the love and openness that Mary showed.

Weave my response into the fabric of your Kingdom work:

To notice the faithfulness of others, to nurture the seeds of courage, and to invite other to say Yes.

May my Yes be to the work of justice and renewal:

To stand with those at the margins, and to go to the places you call, from here to the ends of the world.

Love Calcutta Arts LCA is based in Kolkata, India. It was established to create opportunities for women to experience more freedom through meaningful employment, alongside holistic, wrap-around support. LCA produces beautifully crafted leather and textile goods.

Priya leads Love Calcutta Arts and has chosen to leave the comfort of her home to be part of what God is doing in the red light districts in Kolkata. To see more women experience freedom - through knowing God, meaningful employment and safer communities.

Prayer for India

Things have become increasingly difficult for freedom business like LCA, The Loyal Workshop and Joyya in the last few years.

First covid 19, then the tariffs put in place by the USA, the effects of war on fuel prices and now the PJB government led by Modi has seen increased persecution for christians and other minority groups in India. When disaster, crisis or corruption is going on in the world it is the communities that live with material poverty or vulnerability that are most hurt.

Please join us in holding up our brother and sisters in prayer:

For the christians who are experiencing persecution or living with the threat of persecution.
For the communities of LCA, The Loyal Workshop and Joyya who are working to create places of hope and light in the darkness.
Gods provision and sales for these freedom businesses so that they can continue to give meaningful employment to so many people.
For the political climate in India and the student protests that are currently happening.
For the many christian organisations that are working in India that could be removed by the current government.
For Gods will to be done.

Use these prayer cards to keep praying for these communities.

We believe that God is at work transforming our world: in your neighbourhood, in Aotearoa New Zealand, and to the ends of the earth. We are invited to join in. Each one of us has a hand-carved place within God’s mission.

Discernment helps us pay attention to that invitation. Its a tool to help us navigate the question:

Where is God inviting me to participate and how can I respond faithfully?

This mission week we ask that you take a look at the principles of Discernment using the resource below and ask yourself these questions:

How do I make decisions in my life? Do I truly listen for where God may be leading me?

Assessment Preparation and AI Use

It might seem early, but a little planning now can save a lot of stress later. Check your assessment due dates, allow plenty of time for research and writing, and consider creating an assessment calendar. If you're new to study—or returning after some time away—the 10 Essentials are a great place to start.

When it comes to using AI, make sure you understand Carey's expectations before you begin your assessments. The AI guidelines and declaration are included in the Assessment Cover Page with AI Declaration on CareyOnline under the Assessments tab of each course. These explain how generative AI can be used ethically and appropriately in your studies.

One week down! By now you're hopefully finding your rhythm—settling into classes, reconnecting with friends, and getting a feel for the semester ahead. As the weeks unfold, our prayer is that you'll continue to grow in knowledge, faith, and community, and that you'll see God's hand at work in both the big moments and the everyday ones.

Is your enrolment sorted?

Before classes get fully underway, take a few minutes to check your Student Portal and make sure you're enrolled in the correct courses and at the right level. If anything doesn't look quite right, get in touch with Neroli—she'll be happy to help you get everything sorted.

Have you heard of The Code?

The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021—or simply The Code—sets out the standards all tertiary providers in New Zealand follow to support students' wellbeing, safety, and success.

Jarrahmal Tanielu and Denise Tims are our Student Support Advisors. Denise has a particular focus on supporting Māori students, while Jarrahmal primarily supports Pasifika and distance students. Together, they provide support for all Carey students.

Meet Our New Team Members

Over the semester break, we were delighted to welcome two new staff members to the Carey team. If you see them around campus, be sure to say hello!

Kate Irving has joined us as Administrator & Executive Assistant. Kate works alongside Lorraine, supporting a wide range of day-to-day operations, including room bookings, student invoicing, calendar and travel management, and coordinating various projects that help keep Carey running smoothly.

We're also pleased to welcome Rachel Roche, who is serving as Ministry Training Programme Coordinator while Morgan is on parental leave. Rachel brings a wealth of experience in pastoral leadership, theological study, and a strong understanding of the Carey community. We're thrilled to have her on the team and know she'll be a great support to our ministry training students.

Come Talk Theology and AI

Jonathan and Michael want to read the encyclical and talk about it, and they’re inviting all of you to join them!

We’ll meet every Wednesday from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. here at Carey in Lecture Room 1 for the next five weeks (starting July 22).

For our first meeting, we’ll discuss the Introduction and Chapter One (you can find the full thing here). Bring your lunch and we’ll discuss it together. All are welcome to be present, those who have the read the week’s material are welcome to share. Simple as that! If you want to come virtually, you can use this Teams link. Welcome to semester two at Carey, we are grateful to have you studying with us this semester. At Carey we like to say our pedagogy is relational – in other words, we believe the best learning occurs as your process information and perspectives in conversation with other voices (eg set texts, teaching team) and with other learners. So we encourage you to get to know other students in the class, get to know your class teacher. Use the forums, use the online sessions to start to form connections with other learners – education ideally is a collective journey and not just a solo activity!

Whether you are new or returning to study, we also encourage you to feel free to drop in to the campus at any time if you are in Auckland (at any time, and especially if it corresponds to a scheduled class). We would love to welcome you to our new digs here at Greenlane. Remember: if you are unsure about any aspect of your study – how to set up your Carey Teams APP (make sure you do this before semester starts!), how to use the library, where to find help - then make sure you reach out to any of the student support team early! We are here to help.

Semester One 2026 is almost done!

By now, you’re probably either celebrating, catching your breath, or putting the finishing touches on that last assessment. Wherever you find yourself, take a moment to reflect on all that God has been doing in and through you this semester. We hope you've been challenged, encouraged, stretched, and formed in ways that will continue to bear fruit long after the semester ends.

If you still have work to submit, this is your reminder: all Semester One assessments are due by 11.59pm tonight. Please make sure everything is uploaded before the deadline. Late submissions cannot be accepted unless you have received an approved extension from Neroli, so if there are any issues, get in touch with her as soon as possible.

Whether you're already finished or counting down the final hours, congratulations on making it to the end of another semester. Your hard work, perseverance, and commitment matter, and we're grateful to have shared this journey with you.

Before you switch fully into holiday mode, there are a few important notices below, so keep reading!

FInal Grades

Semester One Final Assessment results (CareyOnline) and Final Course Grades (Student Portal) will be available on Friday, 3 July. We appreciate your patience while lecturers finalise marking and moderation to ensure results are accurate and ready for release.

Semester Two Enrolments

If you are currently enrolled in Semester Two and need to make any changes to your courses, make sure you talk to Neroli to action this.

Semester Two Textbook List

If you're continuing your studies in Semester Two, now's the perfect time to get prepared. The textbook list for upcoming courses is available, giving you plenty of time to check what's required and plan ahead. Many texts can be accessed through the library, while others may need to be purchased. Although Carey doesn't sell textbooks, we've included everything you need to find the right resources before classes begin.

During the break, the library will be open weekdays from 9.00am–5.00pm and closed on Saturdays. These hours will remain in place until Semester Two begins on Monday 13 July.

Weekly Karakia

Our weekly Karakia gatherings have been a highlight of semester one, providing opportunities to worship, learn, and connect as a community. While Karakia will take a break over the study period and semester break, we’re already looking forward to gathering again from Week One of Semester Two.

As winter settles in across Aotearoa, shorter days and cooler weather can make summer afternoons at the beach feel like a distant memory. At this time of the year, it’s normal to notice shifts in your mood and energy. Science helps explain why you might feel a bit different in winter. When you get less sunlight, it can disrupt your internal body clock - affecting your mood, sleep, and appetite. You might find yourself sleeping more, craving different foods, and choosing to hibernate at home.

The good news? There are simple, evidence-based actions you can take to give your wellbeing a boost when it’s cold outside.

In chapel on Tuesday, we reflected on the epic contest between Yahweh and Baal on Mt Carmel (1 Kings 18). If you’re like me, you look at Ahab and the Israelites and wonder how they could be so silly as to worship a false god like Baal. But we worship false gods all the time. John Calvin said, “The human heart is an idol factory.” We give the love and allegiance of our hearts to things that we shouldn’t. And one of our challenges, as God’s people, is to identify those idols. So how can we identify the idols hidden in our heart?

In his little book Counterfeit Gods, Tim Keller offers some really helpful suggestions. One way, he says, is to look at our imagination. Archbishop William Temple once said, “Your religion is what you do with your solitude.” In other words, the true god of your heart is what your thoughts effortlessly go to when there is nothing else demanding your attention. What occupies your mind when you have nothing else to think about? Is it some material possession? Some relationship? Your appearance? Your reputation? That might be an idol.

Another way to discern your heart’s idols is to look at how you spend your money. Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there is your heart also.” (Matt 6:21). Our money flows effortlessly toward our heart’s greatest love. And the mark of an idol is that you often spend too much money on it. What’s that for you? Your clothing? Your car? Your home? Your children?

Thirdly, Keller suggests that we look at our most uncontrollable emotions: “Just as a fisherman looking for fish knows to go where the water is turbulent, look for your idols at the bottom of your most painful emotions, especially those that never seem to lift and that drive you to do things you know are wrong.”

If you’re angry, ask yourself, “Is there something here too important to me, something I must have at all costs.”
If you’re fearful, ask yourself, “Am I so scared, because something in my life is being threatened that I think is a necessity, when it’s not?”
If you’re despondent, ask yourself, “Am I so despairing because I’ve lost something or failed at something that I think is critical to my life?”
If you’re overworking, driving yourself into the ground with frantic activity, ask yourself, “Do I feel that I must have this thing, or achieve this result, to be fulfilled and significant?”

Keller says that when you ask questions like this, when you “pull your emotions up by the roots,” you’ll often find your idols clinging to them. In my experience, he’s right. Your imagination. Your money. Your emotions. Why not take some time in prayer this coming week, and look in these three places? The Lord alone is God, and he wants to free us from the idols that enslave us.

End of Semester

A reminder that next week Tuesday, is the last Karakia for Semester One. It is also the last day for Tuesday classes and the last community lunch of the semester.

As Monday is King’s Birthday, Carey will be closed and there will be no classes. This means that for the following couple of weeks there will be catch up classes on Mondays. These are as follows:

Monday 8 June — Pentateuch, Christian Spirituality, Intro to the NT, and Humanity & Hope
Monday 15 June — Christian Spirituality, Intro to the NT, and Humanity & Hope

The end of the semester is 19 June. Contact Neroli if landing at that date is going to be an issue – the normal extension period changes with the end of the semester.

Reminder about Due Dates and Extensions

This is just a friendly reminder to check the due dates for assessments, and plan accordingly.

Assessments handed in up to one week after the due date are marked with 10% late penalty; assessments handed in between 7-14 days are marked pass/fail. Assessments handed in after the two-week period normally are not marked and receive a fail grade. So, be on time!

If you need an extension, please talk to your teacher and Neroli, and complete an application along with evidence of your valid reason for an extension.

In light of celebrating Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa, Tuesday Community Lunch will be Sāmoan style with Pork Chop Suey, Rice and Pani Keke (Fried Donut Balls) and Pani Popo (Coconut Buns).

This project is nearing the end, but it’s not too late to get involved and help support premature babies in NICUs across Aotearoa. All you need to do is knit a single 15×15cm square—beginners welcome! Squares are joined by volunteers into blankets and donated to hospitals nationwide. It’s a simple, plus you can do it while you are in class!
