CAREY WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 2024 S1 WEEK 3

How Ya Feeling?

Hopefully you’ve gotten the hang of how things will go for the semester and are keeping yourself together. We trust you’re finding community among your teachers and your classmates. Class discussions are designed to be enriching and challenging, and we trust that God is growing you more whole and complete each day.

If you need anything at all, there are heaps of resources available for your
support and wellbeing, including our amazing student support staff. Feel free to send them an email for anything at all.

10 Essentials

Don't forget about the wonderfully helpful 10 Essentials on CareyOnline. They are curated for you to learn better, know what your teachers expect, and how to achieve higher marks! Check them out today!

Need an Extension?

If you are worried about getting your assessments done in time and would like to request an extension, please contact Neroli Hollis, and complete an Application for Extension form.

Questions about Recording Attendance

There have been some questions from students about why we record attendance in class. NZQA and TEC require all tertiary teaching organisations to monitor the attendance and engagement of all learners enrolled in their programmes. Part of the reason for this is because our funding varies depending on what mode of study you specified when enrolling (on-site, Zoom, or distance). That is why your teaching team record attendance for all sessions and block courses.

Attendance is NOT assessed in any way. We are simply required to record and track how engaged you are with your studies, and if a student isn’t engaging with classes (either live or via accessing the recordings) we are expected to follow up to check how you are doing. We would do this anyway, because we want you to successfully complete your studies. It’s difficult to be successful if you aren’t engaging with the course!

If you have any questions about this, feel free to email Rob Ayres, Academic Director.

Want to be a Peer Writing Assistant?

One of the support mechanisms we offer at Carey is a Peer Writing Assistants (PWA) programme. If you are a second or third year student with strong academic writing, and a love for supporting other students, then being a PWA may be for you!

We are looking for three or four students to upskill in peer writing support. If you are interested in finding out more please
email Rob Ayres, Academic Director.

Tuesday Karakia from 11.15am

What a great start to our karakia gatherings this year! It has been enriching to hear from our speakers, and it has been a joy to be formed together by the study of God’s word. Next week, Jonny is going to be sharing with us.

Karakia recordings are now available!

We’ve got Jonathan, Christa, and George’s talks from the first three weeks of karakia up and available for you to watch. Check out the karakia recordings now!

The Library

The library is the place to go for pretty much anything you need while you’re at Carey. Whether you’re online or on-site, Mei Ling, Anna, and Siong can help you get your resources, answer questions, and be around for support as you study. Flick them an email, give them a call (09 526 0347), or stop by whenever you need them. Library hours are below:

Monday to Thursday: 8.30am–6.30pm
Friday: 9am–5pm
Saturday: 10am–12.30pm

Academic Committee Representatives

Herman and Moana (pictured above) are the wonderful students representing you as the Student Academic Representatives on Academic Committee. The committee meets once every four to six weeks during the year, and the student reps attend to participate in the discussions, evaluation, and monitoring of all academic processes and policies here at Carey. They are your voice in a critical space that affects all our students.

If you have any feedback or ideas about how to make studying at Carey even better than it is, feel free to email
Herman or Moana or chat to them if you see them around.

Community Time and Kai!

If you’re an on-site student, don’t miss our times to gather around for great kai and even better kōrero with one another on Mondays and Tuesdays.
