Academic support
Your first contact with academic questions is your lecturer. Contact your lecturer if you need help with understanding the course material, advice on how to proceed with assessments or have questions about the course.
If you are unsure about academic writing, referencing, cover page, library resources, please consult the 10 Essentials for assignments resource. It is available on CareyOnline. Also feel free to talk with the library team (see library services below).
Peer Writing
Carey has peer writing support available for students. If you would like to make an appointment to see a peer support person, please email your request to library@carey.ac.nz. The peer writing assistance will want to work from a prepared draft of your written work, so you will need to have that ready before booking.
Disability or special need services
At Carey, we welcome students with all levels of ability. If you live with an impairment and would like support, you may wish to discuss it with our library team. This will assist us to provide you with the necessary support.
Māori and Pasifika student support
Denise Tims and Jarrahmal Tanielu are the contact people for Māori and Pasifika student support, as well as connecting and supporting ALL students at Carey. They are located in the Library building or via email as below.

International student support
Neroli Hollis may be able to assist students with advice on the following:
- Assistance to students facing difficulties adapting to New Zealand
- Study skills
- General information and advice on accommodation, welfare and health issues, driving in New Zealand and the use of alcohol and tobacco
- Advocacy, to ensure that students understand their rights
- Information on addressing harassment and discrimination issues that may arise

Chaplaincy and Counselling
If you would like the assistance of a chaplain or counsellor, then please contact Neroli Hollis (Academic Registrar). You may wish to get advice or support as soon as possible as it may affect your studies. All enquires will be handed confidentially.
Student Association (SASS)
SASS is a voluntary organisation set up by students. The members of SASS may be able to provide general or academic support for students. In addition, SASS often organises events and food functions for students to attend. SASS has its own Facebook account which only students can access. For more information, please contact the current SASS committee members.
Student support fund
Carey has a student support fund which exists to give financial assistance to those who require it in a crisis or emergency situation. Applications are made directly to the Principal and are treated in strict confidence. Decisions will be made at the discretion of the Principal but will be made according to the criterion of greatest financial need.
Student Counselling and Hardship Fund
A limited pool of funding is allocated to support students for counselling sessions and emergency or crisis situations. Learn more about our Student Counselling and Hardship Fund Guidelines.
Library services
The library staff can assist with any questions you have on resources and access. To access the online catalogue and view the services, please visit the library webpage. There is also a service mainly dedicated to distance students.
Distance Services are available for students who are currently enrolled in Carey courses and studying all their papers by distance, and those who live outside the Auckland urban area—defined as beyond Long Bay in the north, Papakura in the south, and Swanson/Massey in the west.
Books and other loanable items are sent out, with return postage enclosed
PDF copies of articles from hardcopy journals or book chapters are sent by e-mail, in accordance with Copyright Act 1994. (Also available to overseas students)
