Lecturer - New Testament

It is exciting to announce that Sarah Harris will commence as New Testament lecturer at Carey Baptist College in January 2012.

Sarah is a respected emerging New Testament scholar who will contribute significantly to the on-going development of Biblical studies at Carey. She has a passion for, and call to, the theological teaching profession and wants to be used by God in the preparation of men and women for ministry, mission and the marketplace. She has a proven ability to create dynamic learning environments. She describes herself as evangelical-charismatic, and her love for the Bible is contagious, “Hearing from God in the Scriptures and engaging with Jesus drives me, and I find the Bible hard to put down.”

Sarah has a Bachelor of Music from the University of Canterbury and has completed a Diploma of Teaching at the Wellington College of Education. She received her Bachelor of Divinity from the Bible College of New Zealand (now Laidlaw College). She is currently enrolled in a PhD (University of Otago) and is to submit her thesis before the end of the year. Her PhD is exploring the motif of the Davidic Shepherd King in the Lukan narrative. She is currently lecturing in Luke-Acts at Victoria University in Wellington. Sarah is a member of the Tyndale Fellowship and has spent three periods of time writing and engaging with evangelical research scholars at Tyndale House, Cambridge. Prior to undertaking her theological studies Sarah worked as a classroom teacher and a music specialist.

Sarah has a deep love for the church. As a child she was introduced to the Christian faith at an OAC beach mission and attended Dallington Baptist Church in Christchurch. Sarah currently attends St Aiden’s Anglican Church, Auckland where her husband Craig is an associate minister. Sarah is also an ordained minister in the Auckland Diocese and has had significant practical ministry experience. She is passionate about biblical preaching, and loves engaging in theological discussion with people in the church and outside it. Sarah is an active member on the national board of CANZ (Church Army New Zealand, the evangelistic arm of the Anglican church) and the national board of Anglican AFFIRM (the umbrella organization for NZ evangelical groups). Sarah’s faith has a strong global perspective having been involved in Mission trips to Cambodia, Romania and Mozambique.

Sarah comments, “I am both delighted and humbled to be joining the Carey Baptist College teaching team as NT Lecturer in 2012. Carey has a strong tradition of blending scholarship with application, and I am convinced that this is the strongest base for spiritual and ministry formation. I knew God was calling me to pray for a NT teaching role where both Word and Spirit worked together, a place where scholarship was earthed for the people of NZ and the world, and when I heard this role was becoming vacant I sensed God at work. I am very grateful to God for opening this door, and for the confidence Charles and the Board have placed in me, and I look forward to beginning a long relationship with the Carey team.

Sarah is a mother to four young adult children.

We are looking forward to having Sarah as part of our staff team – God continues to be very good to us at Carey!
