Welcome back to Carey for the last study period for the year!
We live in a complex world - a world in which new legislation is always being passed by our Parliament. I need to draw your attention to one specific law change, though, that has just come into force. What is written below might sound a little "official" - but it needs to be as it is a formal statement on file sharing which we need to make in order to ensure Carey is not put at risk.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this.

Copyright (Infringing File Sharing).
In April 2011 the New Zealand Government passed the Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Act 2011. This act amends the Copyright Act 1994 to provide content owners (Rights holders) of copyrighted works such as movies, TV shows and music with a quicker and easier way to penalise people infringing their copyright (from illegal downloading). Under this legislation, from the 11th of August 2011 rights holders can begin to monitor for Internet access which breaches their copyright, and to begin sending infringement notices for breaches of copyright from the 1st of September 2011. This change affects all users of all systems at CAREY BAPTIST COLLEGE, including staff, students, casual users, students in residential villages, business on campus using CAREY BAPTIST COLLEGE internet access, irrespective of location.
Important information
A successful infringement allegation can see CAREY BAPTIST COLLEGE being fined up to $15,000.00 per infringement with the potential of having the internet connection to CAREY BAPTIST COLLEGE being cut for up to six months for all users . Please be advised that CAREY BAPTIST COLLEGE will consider any offending to be a serious matter requiring disciplinary action and would seek to recover the costs, including any associated costs. CAREY BAPTIST COLLEGE may elect to remove internet access rights to anyone who breaches its policies or the law, at CAREY BAPTIST COLLEGE sole discretion.
