Liz Tisdall writes onTime travelling, or, alternative realities in the library

It’s Library Week. Where on your personal ‘I care’ meter do you place this statement?

Depending on your ‘stage of maturity’ the library may conjure up a sort of ‘Ghost of Libraries Past’ image - fingering through card catalogues, endlessly standing at the photocopier using up forest loads of paper, and so on.

Were these the bad old days? Recently I visited the Bodleian Library (started 1488) at Oxford University in England. Early on it seems using this library was not only a privilege but demanded a certain amount of discomfort. Originally each book was chained to the bookshelf. If you wanted to read, you had to stand at a wooden bench in front of the shelf. No artificial light or heating could be used in this hallowed place. Even King Charles 1st was refused permission to actually borrow a book. Presumably he had to line up shivering and squinting along with the mere academics.

Maybe the library is not a spectre on your personal radar at all. If you want to know something, you just Google it. As you can see from the ‘Things students should know…’ presentation above, here at Carey we agree online resources are an important part of a modern library. It does pay to be a bit picky about the quality of information you are accessing this way, though.

Whether you think the library is above princes, a place where a few weird ascetics hang out, a place you go every day, a place somewhere on campus, a place to find knowledge, a place to drink coffee, a place where you make your living, or a place you can hook up to in the comfort of your own home - this is its week. Let’s celebrate!

SWINE FLU – PLEASE BE WISE!

“The flu season is upon us and one of our students has been diagnosed with swine flu. We each need to take personal responsibility regarding the potential spread of flu, therefore please be considerate about the college population and remain at home if you are unwell with flu. Please also take care with thorough hand-washing and covering sneezes. Everyone’s assistance is a necessity and appreciated. Thank you.” Chris Lucas (EA Admin)

NEPAL BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE (NBBC)

A fundraising opportunity 16-24 August

This week we start our fundraising for this college in Nepal. On what basis you choose to give is up to you however some suggestions could be:

ü Take a self denial approach. Think of some of the ‘extra’ things that you would purchase during a week and instead use that money for NBBC e.g. extra coffees or meals out, a movie out or a DVD in etc.

ü Simply empty your wallet, drawers, jars, car ash trays, dig between couch cushionsJ of that small change that most of us have lying dormant around our homes.

ü Challenge yourself and/or some of your peers/friends/colleagues…take $5 and multiply it to whatever you can in a week.

THEN

Onsite people - On Tuesday 24 August, bring in your dollars and cents and we will collect this during Community Worship. Distance students – post in or drop off a cheque/cash for the amount you’d like to give. Please note if you’d like money to go towards a specific need.

If you would like to give via direct credit, simply connect with Neroli for the account details (ph 0800 773 776 or registrar@carey.ac.nz)

Some specific needs of NBBC include (most of these items sit in value in the range of US$200-700 in total):

- Study chairs and book shelves for the library

- Installation of Broadband for the 12 computers in the library

- A decent photocopier
