This week is Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 October), an annual nationwide initiative from the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. This year’s theme is Belonging Matters, inviting us to focus on the small, everyday moments of connection that help foster inclusion and support mental wellbeing.

Grounded in the whakataukī Ko au ko koe, ko koe ko au – I am you, and you are me, this year’s theme reminds us that connection and belonging are important for our mental and emotional health. Belonging can be built in simple ways – checking in with a friend, making time for a kōrero, inviting someone in, or reaching out to someone new.

As we approach the end of the semester, it’s a good opportunity to think about how we’re connecting with others and looking after our own wellbeing. Every small act of connection can help build a stronger, more supportive community.
