One week down! By now you're hopefully finding your rhythm—settling into classes, reconnecting with friends, and getting a feel for the semester ahead. As the weeks unfold, our prayer is that you'll continue to grow in knowledge, faith, and community, and that you'll see God's hand at work in both the big moments and the everyday ones.

Is your enrolment sorted?

Before classes get fully underway, take a few minutes to check your Student Portal and make sure you're enrolled in the correct courses and at the right level. If anything doesn't look quite right, get in touch with Neroli—she'll be happy to help you get everything sorted.

Have you heard of The Code?

The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021—or simply The Code—sets out the standards all tertiary providers in New Zealand follow to support students' wellbeing, safety, and success.

All You Need to Know in One Place

You’ll likely have come across our Current Students webpage by now, but we’ve put it together so you’d have all the answers you need in one place. It’s your place to start if you need to know something. Here are a few of the resources you may find handy there:

• CareyOnline - our learning platform has all your course info, lecture recordings, and more.
• 10 Essentials - from how to use the library, to how to reference, these documents have all you need to succeed in your assessments.
• Adademic Regulations and Calendar - information on student regulations, harassment and complaint procedures, and much more can be found here.
• Timetables - check these out to see when your classes are running. Also, don't forget to familiarise yourself with your course outlines on CareyOnline.
• Student Support and Wellbeing - learn about our passionate team and resources available to you, like information on The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice.

We're Here to Support You

Your success is our priority, and our support team is here to help throughout your studies.

• Siong Ng is our Library Manager and Student Support Director. Based in the Ayson-Clifford Library, Siong can help with library resources, referencing, assessment skills, and overall student support.
• Neroli Hollis, our Academic Registrar, is your go-to person for enrolment, CareyOnline, course planning, administrative enquiries, international student support, disability support, and any changes to your programme of study.
• Jarrahmal Tanielu and Denise Tims are our Student Support Advisors. Denise has a particular focus on supporting Māori students, while Jarrahmal primarily supports Pasifika and distance students. Together, they provide support for all Carey students.

If you're not sure who to contact, simply get in touch with any member of the team—they'll make sure you're connected with the right person.

Come Talk Theology and AI

Hi everyone, Pope Leo XIV has just published the first encyclical of his papacy, Magnifica Humanitas, or “On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence.” Such encyclicals form the foundation for what is known as Catholic Social Teaching (CST), a “body of thought on social issues that has been developed” by the Catholic church “over the past hundred years.” While perhaps nobody on this list is Roman  Catholic, I consider CST to be an incredibly thoughtful, helpful resource for thinking about how the good news about Jesus lands in our world today (check out the 9 core principles above).

Jonathan and Michael want to read the encyclical and talk about it, and they’re inviting all of you to join them!

We’ll meet every Wednesday from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. here at Carey in Lecture Room 1 for the next five weeks (starting July 22).

For our first meeting, we’ll discuss the Introduction and Chapter One (you can find the full thing here). Bring your lunch and we’ll discuss it together. All are welcome to be present, those who have the read the week’s material are welcome to share. Simple as that! If you want to come virtually, you can use this Teams link. It’d be great to know if you plan to come, so just send Rhodes an email at michael.rhodes@carey.ac.nz.

The Library

The Ayson-Clifford Library is at the heart of student life at Carey, providing the resources, guidance, and support you need to succeed in your studies. Whether you're studying on campus or online, Siong Ng, our Library Manager and Student Support Director, is here to help with finding resources, referencing, research, assessment skills, and general study support.

If you need assistance, you're always welcome to drop into the library, give Siong a call on 09 526 0347, or send an email. No question is too small—we're here to help you make the most of your time at Carey.

First Steps for New Students

If you are a new student, we have a brief course for you that will help acclimate you to study at Carey. It is required, and we ask that you complete it promptly within the first four weeks of the semester. You can find it through CareyOnline, but chat to Siong in the library if you need any help.

Library Hours

Monday to Thursday: 8.30am to 6pm
Friday: 9am to 5pm
Saturday: 10am to 12.30pm
