Studying and Reading

You’ve made it through more than a third of the semester, and now it’s time for Study and Reading weeks!

This three-week period from Monday, 1 September to Friday, 19 September, is the perfect time to polish off your current assessments, plan for the next ones, and catch your breath if you need to. As a reminder, there will also be no classes (except for block courses and Certificate in Christian Leadership courses*), no weekly karakia, and no community lunches.

Your normal lecture schedule will resume in week 10 on Monday, 22 September. If you have any questions, talk to your teachers or any of our staff.

*NOTE: Certificate in Christian Leadership (Micro-credential) students have a two-week break, and classes will resume in week 9 on Tuesday, 16 September for these students only.

Don’t panic about assessments

Keep your head up, don’t freak out, stay calm, believe in yourself, and all the other platitudes out there are well and good, but there are deadlines, and sometimes it’s easy to panic. But, we’ve got your back and are here for you. There’s the 10 Essentials to help you with details, and our support staff are still around and keen as to help you as you go.

So before you start to lose your mind, give us a shout. And, if you’ve already begun to lose your mind, give us a shout.

AI Declaration

Don’t forget to make sure you are up to speed on appropriate use of AI and more. The Assessment Declaration page has also been changed, and you must submit one for EVERY assessment. So, check that one out too—it’s in your course page(s) on CareyOnline, under the Assessments tab.

Extensions

If you are worried about getting your assessments done in time and would like to request an extension, please contact Neroli Hollis, and complete an Application for Extension form. Remember, these are for unforseen circumstances, not poor planning.

2026 timetables

The timetables for next year are up on our website. Give them a look to see what’s coming when for semesters one and two 2026. Keep in mind, these are indicative only at this point, so some dates and times may change. Here are the 2026 timetables!

Weekly karakia

With Study and Reading weeks, we won’t be joining for our weekly karakia until week 10. It’s sad, but we can’t wait to see you back Tuesday, 23 September.

You can listen to the karakia recordings for the first six weeks of the semester on CareyOnline. Check them out!

The library

Library hours are the same over the Study and Reading weeks, and so is the general level of awesomeness of our staff. Anna, Mei Ling, and Siong are keen as ever to assist you with anything you need. Flick them an email, give them a call (09 526 0347), or stop by the library.

• Monday to Thursday: 8:30am to 6:30pm
• Friday: 9am to 5pm
• Saturday: 10am to 12:30pm

Accessing Archives and Stack collection

As a reminder, accessing the archives collection or books that are in the stack collection will require some forward planning for the next few months. Three working days' notice needs to be given if you would like anything from either collection. Just give us a shout, and we will help you out.

Carey Graduate School Research Conference

If you are interested in what integrative theology might look like beyond the undergraduate world, we would love for you to join us for our Carey Graduate School conference. It is free and comes with food—so there is also that!

We will be hearing from several current Carey graduate students, a guest historian from Otago, and some Carey Alumni. We would love for you to join us but do need you to register online so we know how much to cater.

Graduation 2026

It’s a ways off still, but some of you are graduating next year, and we can’t start getting excited about that too soon. Graduation will take place Saturday, 16 May 2026 from 2pm (location TBC). Those graduating will need to arrive by noon), so mark your calendars.

The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand has some amazing resources for helping you care for yourself. WIth all that goes on during the semester, it may benefit you to check out their Five Ways to Wellbeing. They provide helpful, pragmatic suggestions to keep you grounded and focused on the right things. Check them out!
