It has been so good meeting many of our new students during Orientation events this week! If you are a new student, welcome, and if you are a returning student, welcome back!

This is the first installment of the CareyWeekly Newsletter for semester one 2025. These newsletters are packed full of useful information, so please read them! We have re-vamped our new students webpage, so if you missed orientation or just need to reference some of the resources, you can find everything there! You can find a link to the timetables, Academic Regulations, CareyOnline, and so much more.

Classes start on Monday, so hopefully you’ve accessed CareyOnline and read through the course outlines for each course! I highly recommend you do that ahead of next week, and you will definitely earn brownie points with your teaching team if you do!

Supporting our students is our top priority, and we want to let you know about our amazing team.

Library Team

Our Library team, Siong Ng, Mei Ling Lee, and Anna Tovey, are based in the Ayson-Clifford Library, and they can assist you with library resources, referencing for assessments, and general assessment skills.

Student Support Advisors

Denise Tims and Jarrahmal Tanielu are your Student Support Advisors. Denise has a primary responsibility for connecting with and supporting Māori students, while Jarrahmal will have primary responsibility for supporting our Pasifika students and distance students. Both of them will also provide wider support for all students in partnership with our wonderful library support team: Siong, Mei Ling, and Anna.

Academic Registrar

If you haven’t met Neroli yet, you are missing out. She is your first port of call for just about anything, handling administrative enquiries, including CareyOnline, enrolment, and course planning. Neroli also supports international students and students with disabilities.

You can talk to any of our team, and they will ensure you are connected with the best person to help you in your studies.

Weekly Karakia Tuesday from 11:15am

As we begin a new academic year at Carey we also begin a new theme in our weekly karakia. The Gospel of Mark is a rugged and unpolished book, the shortest of the biblical Gospels and written in the lowest quality Greek, but also a rich and challenging literary work that can speak on many levels and with hidden secrets to discover throughout.

But Mark also paints Jesus’ disciples as people on a journey: often stumbling, sometimes making great leaps of faith, and other times failing miserably. So, in reading Mark we will find both a messiah who calls, and also people like us who respond to that call. As we read Mark together this year, our prayer is that we will find new resources of faith and wisdom, and most of all that we will hear the call of the messiah afresh.

We encourage you to join us on-site if you can, even if you don’t normally come to campus. We gather every Tuesday during teaching weeks, from 11:15am in our whare karakia. An audio recording will also be made available to those unable to join us, and we will update you through CareyWeekly when they are ready .

The Library

Speaking of the library, it’s the place to go for pretty much anything you need while you’re at Carey. Whether you’re online or on-site, Mei Ling, Anna, and Siong can help you get your resources, answer questions, and be around for support as you study. Flick them an email, give them a call (09 526 0347), or stop by whenever you need them.

Extended Library Hours are back!

Monday to Thursday: 8.30am to 6.30pm
Friday: 9am to 5pm
Saturday: 10am to 12.30pm

First Steps for new students

All new students should be enrolled in First Steps on CareyOnline. This is a course to familiarise yourself with life at Carey and give you vital academic skills for your study journey. This is a required course, so please make it a priority to complete if you haven’t done it before.

Community Life

Coffee, Cake & Convo on Mondays at 12.15pm in the wharekai

Come join your classmates and Carey staff for coffee and cake every Monday. Bring your own lunch, and make the most of this chance to get to know one another.

A great opportunity to connect for on-campus students is over lunch on Tuesdays. Lunch is provided, so there’s really no reason to not come along, right?
