I've always loved John 1.

No chapter in the entire Bible introduces us more fully to Jesus than this chapter. The names and titles for Jesus keep on flowing, each full of their own meaning: Son of God, Lamb of God, Word, Son of Joseph, Messiah, Rabbi, Jesus of Nazareth, King of Israel etc.

However it is four little words that capture my attention at the start of another Carey year: Jesus is the light (1:9) and the life (1:4). Jesus is full of grace and full of truth (1:14). It is as if John 1 is a 'table of contents' for the rest of the gospel because it is these four characteristics about Jesus that keep coming up in the subsequent story. Why not take 60min to discover this for yourself and read through the gospel of John in one sitting during this week?

There are two implications of these four words that are on my mind...

(a)They say something about us

As followers of Jesus we follow his example. Now that does not mean that we always expect to do what he did. After all none of those names and titles listed above are true of us, are they? Some things about Jesus are uniquely Jesus and are un-followable by us. And yet as we slide across to light and life, grace and truth it is these qualities that need to ripen in every community of Jesus-followers. Because we are the 'only Jesus some will ever see', these qualities need to be seen in us.

(b)They say something about our world

'Light' suggests that there is a darkness in which people go missing. 'Life' suggests that there is a suffering, even a death, from which people cannot escape. 'Grace' suggests that there is a hardness, even a bitterness, which tramples on people. 'Truth' suggests that there are lies and deceit in which people are drowning. It is true. There is more than 'suggestion' going on here. The absence of these four qualities does create messes in our world.

Let's not lose sight of these qualities of Jesus this year. Let them develop as the headlines in our lives. But as surely as "the Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood" (1:14), let's not forget that the place where light and life, grace and truth are designed to be is out in the communities around us. While that is not always easy to do when we are focused on an intensive season of training, let's never lose sight of this ultimate purpose for our lives.
