Discipline - who likes that word? I hate it especially when it is said to be for your own good. We often discipline our kids and pets (yes dogs are included). In our mind, we hope that it will be good for them. Is it only applied to other people?
Richard Foster in his book Celebration of Discipline, categorises discipline in three parts – Outward (e.g. simplicity, solitude, submission and service), Inward (e.g. meditation, prayer, study and fasting) and Corporate (e.g. confession, worship, guidance and celebration) disciplines. I strongly believe that time should be been added in all the disciplines. In The New SCM Dictionary of Christian Spirituality, Philip Sheldrake states that “interestingly time is not a prominent theme in books on Christian spirituality even though time and the sanctification of time are central to a religion whose foundational doctrine is God’s incarnation at a particular historical moment.” This year I have been doing a research on distance students’ behaviour and found that the major struggle that students have is time. It make me pondered how important time management is. If we do not have good time management, we will struggle to make space for any of the disciplines.
It requires a lot of courage and discipline. I often have to discipline myself. To set and prioritised my time wisely. In order to function close to 100%, I make sure I am fully awake when I am at work and this requires no late nights on weekdays. As we near to the end of the semester, may you find time for God and continue to run the race with discipline.
If you are feeling guilty after reading this, do not fear. As Richard Foster puts it, “joy is the keynote to all the disciplines.”

The Evaluation Panel for the Masters of Applied Theology will be at Carey on THIS Wednesday and Thursday of this week. There will be a powhiri in the Chapel on Wednesday morning for members of the Panel and staff.

TSCF Catalyst Summer Conference 2012
7-14 January
TSCF's ministry to young professionals, workers and graduates, Catalyst is bringing a team of five to New Zealand from the internationally respected Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York, which is led by Dr Timothy Keller. The team are some of the leading thinkers and practioners globally helping (younger) professionals apply the gospel to all of life. (Details below)
Over seven full days we’ll be exploring the four key turning points of scripture together: The Creation, Fall, The Cross and New Creation. We’ll be spending significant time getting a better vision of God’s work in and through our work. We’ll be taking the time to learn and practice spiritual disciplines to enrich and enable our relationship with God in our personal and professional lives. We’ll be wrestling with how we can see the gospel embodied and expressed throughout our professions and in wider New Zealand society. It’s going to be a fantastic week of fun, friendship and good food.

ADVANCE WARNING FOR 2012!
The academic regulations relating to the late submission of assessment items will change next year. From the start of semester 1 2012:
1. all assessment work submitted after the due date, and up to one week late, will incur an academic penalty of a 10% reduction in marks (normally this will be equivalent to two grade steps – eg an A reducing to a B+, or a B+ reducing to a B- etc) ;
2. all assessment work submitted more than one week after the due date will be marked, but will not be graded, and will receive only a “Pass” or “Fail” result
Except that for final course assessments the latest date for submission will be the last day of each semester (no longer one week after the end of semester). Consequently no assessment work will be marked if it is submitted after this date, unless the student has previously been granted an extension.
