Upcoming Study and Reading Weeks

We’ve already reached the end of Week 5. Can you believe it? With only two more teaching weeks before we enter our Study and Reading period (Weeks 7–9), this is a good moment to take stock of how far you’ve come.

Between Friday, 3 April (Good Friday) and Friday, 24 April, regular classes will pause (except for any block courses scheduled during that time). Our weekly karakia and community lunches will also take a break. This three‑week stretch is intentionally set aside to give you room to concentrate, catch up, and deepen your understanding as you work toward your assessments.

Here are a few ways to make the most of this time:

• Re‑engage with readings and course content

• Make progress on assignments

• Get yourself ready for the final phase of the semester

The campus will remain open, and staff will be working as usual throughout Study and Reading weeks. However, please note that Carey—including the library—will be closed for Easter from Friday, 3 April through Tuesday, 7 April.

We’ll be back in the classroom in Week 10, starting Tuesday, 27 April (since campus is closed for ANZAC Day on Monday, 26 April). If you need support or have questions at any point, give us a shout.

Assessment prep and AI declaration

Be sure you are planning accordingly with assessments nearing. Set out enough time beforehand to get your research together, create an assessment calendar, and above all, make sure you’ve looked at the 10 Essentials. If you are relatively new to study or have been away for a while, these will make your life SO MUCH easier. If you’re a seasoned pro, there’s still probably something in there that’ll help.

AI declaration requirement

For every assessment, you MUST submit a cover sheet and AI declaration. Your lecturers should go over this with you, and the cover page can be found in the Assessments tab of your course page or the link above. Do not forget to submit this REQUIRED form with your assessments.

Need an extension?

Stuff happens. We get it. Sometimes you need to stretch out an extension deadline. Here’s what you need to know before you request one:

Assessments handed in up to one week after the due date are marked with 10% late penalty; assessments handed in between 7-14 days are marked pass/fail. Assessments handed in after the two-week period normally are not marked and receive a fail grade. So, be on time!

If you need an extension, please talk to your teacher and Neroli, and complete an application along with evidence of your valid reason for an extension.

Weekly Karakia

It was a special time in karakia this past week hearing Christa McKirland preach for the final time in that space. Next we will have Carey student, Rachael Lotoaso, speaking in karakia. This whole gathering will be curated by current students, so be sure to turn up if you’re around.

We are recording sermons from karakia this year, and they will be released in time through the CareyOPEN podcast. Stay tuned!

The library

The library is your go‑to hub for support while you’re studying at Carey. Whether you're learning online or on campus, Mei Ling and Siong are ready to help you access resources, answer your questions, and support you along the way. You can email them, give them a call at 09 526 0347, or drop in whenever you need a hand.

Library hours

Hours remain the same through Study and Reading weeks:

• Monday to Thursday: 8.30am to 6pm

• Friday: 9am to 5pm

• Saturday: 10am to 12.30pm

If you need access to the library after hours and on Saturdays, email the library.

First Steps for new students

The First Steps deadline is approaching on 2 April—not long now! So, go to CareyOnline and complete the course. It’s a requirement, yes, but it will definitely benefit you, espeically with assessments coming up.

Update your bookmarks!

If you are a returning student and have bookmarked the previous library catalogue, please remove it as we have migrated to a new library catalogue—so just go through the Carey Library website. But you probably new that already, right?
