Ko Levi Dyer ahau. It is such a blessing and privilege to be your student president this year.

My role is to represent your student voice, and to encourage community both on campus and online. With the Student Association (SASS) we are keen to organise events and initiatives for both on campus and for our online students.

One easy way to be a part of what is happening in our community is by joining our newly launched Students WhatsApp. This is an opt-in group platform with both an announcements page (Account phone number is hidden) and group chat that is moderated by SASS (Account phone number visible).

IMPORTANT: Class Meetings and Recordings

As you know, we have created Microsoft Office365 accounts for you, and you now have single sign-on capabilities across Outlook, the Library, CareyOnline, and Teams. Yay!

Teams is where we host our lecture recordings, and if you have been wondering, “What is class going to look like?” or “How do I view my lecture recordings?” we’ve got just the thing for you!

Here is a tipsheet that will get you started on how to access your class meetings and recordings. Take a look at it, and you should be sweet for starting next week. Your lecturers will give you more information along the way, but you can always contact our team for more.

New Testament assignment 1 workshop

Our Student Support team are offering an Introduction to the New Testament Assignment 1 Workshop next week to help guide students through the assessment task, highlight the marking rubric, and offer a few tips for essay writing.

• Monday, 9 March (Week 3)
• 12:45-1:15pm
• Akomanga Tuatahi Lecture Room 1 and online via Teams for distance students.

This workshop is a great opportunity to get your head around what you will need to do for the assignment, so take advantage of our team’s expertise.

Assessment prep and AI usage guidelines

Even though the semester just got started, you are likely interested in a way to avoid getting stressed out this term, yeah? If you are, make sure to check the due dates for assessments, and plan accordingly. Set out enough time beforehand to get your research together, create an assessment calendar, and above all, make sure you’ve looked at the 10 Essentials. If you are relatively new to study or have been away for a while, these will make your life SO MUCH easier. If you’re a seasoned pro, there’s still probably something in there that’ll help.

AI-Use Guidelines

You’ve probably heard all the buzz about AI by now—and maybe even wondered whether it could give you a hand with your assignments. Totally understandable. That’s why we’ve put together clear, sensible guidelines to help you use generative AI ethically, responsibly, and without accidentally treating ChatGPT like it’s Anselm unveiling a fresh chapter of Cur Deus Homo.

You’ll find all of Carey’s AI guidelines right there in your course page on CareyOnline, under the Assessments tab—so make sure you check them out. Whether you’re convinced AI is the future or still proudly committed to your trusty pen, we’re here to help you navigate it all.

Karakia has been amazing in our new Te Whare Oranga, and we can’t wait to hear what’s next with Michael Rhodes sharing with us from 1 Kings 2-3.

We are recording sermons from karakia this year, and they will be released in time through the CareyOPEN podcast. Stay tuned!

The library

The library is the place to go for pretty much anything you need while you’re at Carey. Whether you’re online or on-site, Mei Ling and Siong can help you get your resources, answer questions, and be around for support as you study. Flick them an email, give them a call (09 526 0347), or stop by whenever you need them.

Library hours

• Monday to Thursday: 8.30am to 6pm
• Friday: 9am to 5pm
• Saturday: 10am to 12.30pm

After hours access

If you need access to the library after hours and on Saturdays, email the library.

First Steps for new students

All new students should be enrolled in First Steps on CareyOnline. This is a course to familiarise yourself with life at Carey and give you vital academic skills for your study journey. This is a required course, so please make it a priority to complete if you haven’t done it before.

For those of you who have completed the course, did you know the First Steps videos are available to watch any time you want? They are great refreshers for working on your assessments. Why not check out the one on Basic Searching to get you ready for assessments?
