CAREY WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 2025 S2 WEEK 1

The path forward

We hope you are ready for an exhilirating semester of learning more about our God, one another, and yourselves. Maybe you are unsure of where the road is taking you, but we hope you are ready to see what God has in store and how you might grow wherever you are placed.

We are here to help you and you go, so read on for everything you need to traverse the weeks ahead.

Is your enrolment all good?

As it’s the beginning of the term, it’s always prudent to make sure everything is good with your enrolment. Make sure your Student Portal shows the right course and level. Also, if you notice anything else off, get in touch with Neroli. She’ll sort you out!

Have you heard of The Code?

The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, which we just call, “The Code,” lays out roles and responsibilities set out by NZQA for schools like Carey to support your wellbeing, development, and educational achievement. We like the code and have people and processes in place to help you in these areas. Learn more on our Compliance and Reporting page.

All you need to know in one place

You’ll likely have come across our Students webpage by now, but we’ve put it together so you’d have all the answers you need in one place. It’s your place to start if you need to know something. Here are a few of the resources you may find handy there:

  • CareyOnline - our learning platform has all your course info, lecture recordings, and more.

  • 10 Essentials - from how to use the library, to how to reference, these documents have all you need to succeed in your assessments.

  • Academic Regulations and Calendar - information on student regulations, harassment and complaint procedures, and much more can be found here.

  • Timetables - check these out to see when your classes are running. Also, don't forget to familiarise yourself with your course outlines on CareyOnline.

  • Student Support and Wellbeing - learn about our passionate team and resources available to you, like information on The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice.

  • Student Facebook Group - a page for current students of Carey to ask questions, share resources, and whatever else you need.

Your support team

Supporting our students is our top priority, and we want to let you know about our amazing team.

Library Team

Our Library team, Siong Ng, Mei Ling Lee, and Anna Tovey, are based in the Ayson-Clifford Library, and they can assist you with library resources, referencing for assessments, and general assessment skills.

Student Support Advisors

Denise Tims and Jarrahmal Tanielu are your Student Support Advisors. Denise has a primary responsibility for connecting with and supporting Māori students, while Jarrahmal will have primary responsibility for supporting our Pasifika students and distance students. Both of them will also provide wider support for all students in partnership with our wonderful library support team: Siong, Mei Ling, and Anna.

Academic Registrar

If you haven’t met Neroli yet, you are missing out. She is your first port of call for just about anything, handling administrative enquiries, including CareyOnline, enrolment, and course planning. Neroli also supports international students and students with disabilities. And, if you need to make changes to your course early in the semester, reach out to Neroli.

You can talk to any of our team, and they will ensure you are connected with the best person to help you in your studies.

Mid-winter lunch from SASS

It’s cold outside for us Aucklanders. So, we are coming inside where the heat is on. And we are gonna eat! Your Student Association (SASS) is hosting a mid-winter lunch on Tuesday, 5 August after karakia. The feast will feature Eastern cuisine (Chinese, Korean, etc.) with Western desserts (pudding and donuts). You will not want to miss this!

NOTE: The above picture is an approximation and not a guarantee of what might be served at the lunch. What is guaranteed is that we will have a mean as feed together!

Weekly karakia

Karakia got off to a great start this week as Jonathan shared with us. Next week, former student and current pastor, Monique Lee, will be sharing with us. Join us at 11:15am in our whare karakia.

Audio recordings

You’ll be able to listen to the karakia recordings as the semester goes on. So, even if you can’t make it, you can still listen to the entire gathering on CareyOnline. This week’s recording is up now.

First Steps and the library

Anna, Mei Ling, and Siong are keen as to assist you with anything you need. Flick them an email, give them a call (09 526 0347), or stop by the library.

Library Hours

  • Monday to Thursday: 8:30am to 6:30pm
  • Friday: 9am to 5pm
  • Saturday: 10am to 12:30pm

First Steps for new students

If you are a new student, we have a brief course for you that will help acclimate you to study at Carey. It is required, and we ask that you complete it promptly within the first four weeks of the semester. You can find it through CareyOnline, but chat to the library staff if you need any help.

Accessing Archives and Stack collection

For the next four months accessing the archives collection or books that are in the stack collection will require some forward planning. Three working days' notice needs to be given if you would like anything from either collection. Just give us a shout, and we will help you out.

Tuesday formation

A reminder that on Tuesday mornings we have formation tracks for everyone at Carey. For many of you, these are part of your programme (Mission Track, Intermission, Pastoral Leadership, and Youth Pastoral Leadership), and you should be aware of them. For everyone else, there’s Raranga!

Raranga for all students

If you’re not already part of a formation group with your programme, you are welcome to attend Raranga on Tuesday mornings throughout the semester from 10-11am. If you're on-site, pop into Lecture Room 1, and if you are out of Auckland, reach out to Nicola for a Zoom link.
