CAREY WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 2024 S1 WEEK 1

The Semester is Under Way

Week one is in the books, and we are going full speed now. Classes are happening, and we’re all starting to find our rhythms for this new term. Formation groups are forming, karakia is bringing us together for worship, Zoomers are engaged in their classes, CareyLocal cohorts are growing together, and we’re all anticipating the great things God has in store for us all. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s take a breath and make sure all our ducks are in a row.

Have you heard of The Code?

The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, which we affectionately refer to as “The Code” lays out roles and responsibilities set out by NZQA for schools like Carey to support your wellbeing, development, and educational achievement. As a signatory of the Code, we have people and processes in place to help you in these areas. Learn more on our Student Support page.

Change of Enrolment and more

Are you in the right level for your course? Something else off? If you need to make changes to your courses, complete an Application to Change Courses, or if you need further help, flick an email to Neroli. She knows everything.

Student Handbook

The Student Handbook has key information about your enrolment, fees, courses, and other academic and pastoral support. Be sure to check it out.

Support for You

You’ve no doubt seen the lovely folks in the picture above. Together, they make up our student support team. While you can’t see their capes, they are always putting in superhero-level efforts to help all our students flourish.

For general information about studying at Carey, help with finding books and articles, or basic administrative questions, the Library is the place to go. Mei Ling, Anna, and Siong are always keen to assist. They can also help with parking stickers and building access cards for on-site students.

For student support, such as writing essays, pastoral concerns, and more, connect with Tanya and Eugene. They assist all our Carey students, but are also there for our Māori and Pasifika students as well.

Need additional support?

If you have a unique learning need or disability, please connect with Neroli, so we can be sure to provide whatever support we can to help you during your Carey journey.

Tuesday Karakia from 11.15am

Jonathan kicked off our 2024 karakia gatherings talking through 1 Timothy 1:1-7 with a sermon entitled, “Trained for God’s Household.” Between the talk, the worship, and the community, we’re off to a great start! Stay excited, because Christa will be sharing with us this coming Tuesday.

Karakia recordings for all our students

We recorded Jonathan’s talk last week, and will make it available to you soon. Going forward, we will do our best to have these available the same week so you can watch (and re-watch) them, being formed along the way. Stay tuned!

The Library

The library is the place to go for pretty much anything you need while you’re at Carey. Whether you’re online or on-site, Mei Ling, Anna, and Siong can help you get your resources, answer questions, and be around for support as you study. Flick them an email, give them a call (09 526 0347), or stop by whenever you need them. Library hours are below:

Monday to Thursday: 8.30am–6.30pm
Friday: 9am–5pm
Saturday: 10am–12.30pm

Community Time and Kai!

If you’re an on-site student, don’t miss our times to gather around for great kai and even better kōrero with one another on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Coffee, Cake, and Convo

On Mondays from 12.15pm in the wharekai, bring your own lunch, and hang out with your classmates and the staff. Coffee and cake provided.

Tuesday Lunch

Just after karakia, mosey into the wharekai for our weekly community lunch. This week, we are having an international flair with chilli dogs. Not sure what those are? Check out the picture above. Still not sure? Come along Tuesday at 12.15 to find out.

Michael, Siong, Anna Tovey, and a few others are hosting lunch for the whole Carey whānau. Can’t wait to hang out!

As a reminder, if you haven’t let us know of any dietary preferences, please do so now.

First Steps

All new students should be enrolled in First Steps on CareyOnline. This is a course to familiarise yourself with life at Carey and give you vital academic skills for your study journey. This is a required course, so please make it a priority to complete.

All First Steps Videos available online

Did you know we’ve made all the First Steps videos available on CareyOnline? So, even if you’ve already completed the course you can watch them again. Ever thought to yourself, “Gee, I wish I could remember what that amazing video on how to reference a commentary”? Well, now you can watch all the First Steps videos anytime you want!

Raranga: Open Formation on Tuesdays

If you’re not already part of a formation group with your programme, you are welcome to attend Raranga on Tuesday mornings throughout the semester from 10-11am.

Raranga is the new name for our open formation group, and it means "weaving," as Carey is a place where we are woven together. We will get to know each other better, support one another prayerfully and practically, and do all sorts of things throughout the year. We will be delving into scripture, hearing from Carey staff, eating yummy things, giving mini sermons on the theology of donuts, going out for breakfast, and more. So, come along!

If you're on-site, pop into the Library Commons Room, and if you are a regional student, feel free to
join via Zoom.
