Looking Ahead

It’s the end of week 11, clocks have changed, and the weather is (slowly, maybe, almost, please Lord!) about to turn for the better. And while summer is a ways off, we hope you are in full stride at this critical juncture of the semester. Lectures are as envigorating as ever, and we are sure you’re planning well for upcoming assessments. Check out the 10 Essentials, talk with our Library staff, reach out to your teachers, or contact our Peer Writing Assistants if you hit a wall or need some critical insight for your work.

Slight changes to how we communicate with you

In addition to this newsletter now coming through Mailchimp, we are also sending other pertinent communication through this platform, directly into your email inbox. And while we recognise the tendency to unsubscribe, please don’t! However, we will try extremely hard to not overwhelm you with stuff you don’t need to know. If you have some feedback on CareyWeekly (or anything else), just reply, and let us know.

Student Focus Groups

As part of our ongoing desire to improve our programmes and services, we try to bring students together in annual focus groups. We are interested in how you are finding study here and what ideas you might have for how things could be even better. Focus groups are available for the following qualification cohort groups:

• NZ Certificate and NZ Diploma Level 5: (Thursday, 19 October from 11am-12pm)

• Bachelor of Applied Theology: (Thursday, 19 October from 1-2pm)

• Graduate Diploma of Applied Theology Level 7: (Friday, 20 October from 11.30am-12.30pm)

• Postgraduate Diploma of Applied Theology and Master of Applied Theology: (Thursday, 26 October from 1-2pm)

If you are working on one of the above qualifications and would like to participate, just complete this brief form and sign up for the focus group for your programme.

Student Survey on the Pastoral Care Code of Practice

Carey is a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Domestic and International Students) Code of Practice, and we would love your feedback on how well you think we are doing in meeting these requirements.

Have you met with a Peer Writing Assistant yet?

Our Peer Writing Assistants are here for you, and just in time for those critical assessments coming due. Make the most of their expertise by booking a session with Moana or Keren (left to right in the photo above) today.

To book a 25-50-minute session, contact the Library with the following details:

• Your name and student ID number

• Which assessment you are focusing on (course, assessment outline), and briefly identify what aspect of the assessment you would like help with.

• Whether you want a 25-minute or 50-minute slot (in-person, via Zoom, or email)!

Feedback on the 2024 Student Services Fee Proposal

The Student Services Fee (click this link for some FAQs) is a non-tuition fee that is charged to students enrolled at Carey. The funds received by Carey from the fee are ring-fenced, meaning they can only be spent on student services. So, that means it’s entirely FOR students. But, we need to hear from you! Each year, we request student feedback on the Student Services Fee before it is finalised. This is in compliance with guidelines set out by the Tertiary Education Commission, but we also really care about what you have to say.

Take a look at the 2024 Proposed Student Services Fee, which outlines where the funds will be spent and heaps of other details.

Please review the document and provide feedback to Torin Bradley (torinjbradley@gmail.com) Student President, by Friday, 6 October 2023. You can also talk directly to Torin if you see him around campus.

Reminder about Due Dates and Extensions—Plan Ahead!

You’ve got some time, so don’t lose your mind just yet. But, this is just a friendly reminder that the end of the semester is 10 November. So, please check the due dates for assessments, and plan accordingly.

Assessments handed in up to one week after the due date are marked with 10% late penalty; assessments handed in between 7-14 days are marked pass/fail. Assessments handed in after the two-week period normally are not marked and receive a fail grade. So, be on time!

If you need an extension, please talk to your teacher and Neroli, and complete an application for an extension.

Library News—Book Sale Still on!

As you stop by the Library for study or get some help with your assessments, why not peruse the book sale? It was so popular this week, that we are extending it another week!

Oh, and books are only $1 each. What a bargain!

Karakia on Tuesday, 3 October

Whether you come on-site or Zoom in, our weekly karakia provides a space to connect and hopefully hear from the Lord.

This Tuesday, Tanya Lameta will be speaking. Join online or come on campus to worship with the Carey whānau at 11.15am on Tuesday.

Community Lunches

Don’t miss community lunches this week: Monday at 12.15pm and Tuesday from noon, right after karakia. On Monday, we’re having hot dogs, which are always a crowd please. See you at the wharekai!

Don’t forget lunch prep/serving and clean-up duties, which are posted in the wharekai.

Online Open Evening

Online Open Evening is Tuesday, 10 October from 7.30-8.45pm. Tell your friends about this great opportunity to learn more about Carey.
