Values and givens, a thought from Neroli

I have been reading a book by Guy Martin--he is a UK man who is keen on motorcycles and anything mechanical 😊. It’s an interesting read and follows on from watching his TV shows where he goes on adventures local and overseas usually involving motorcycles.

Often in his book he comments about how he operates and shares some of his values or givens in life.

One comment was about when he was away filming. He mentioned that he took himself off to eat his evening meal in a café out amongst the locals rather than staying in the hotel with the team he has spent all day with. He thought it was healthy to have a bit of time on his own.

Another comment was how he is now supporting (financially and sharing from his experience) those who are coming up in the motor racing scene--giving back.

I wonder, how are you are going with setting up and remaining committed to values and givens in your life?

Block courses moved to online delivery

We have made the difficult decision to move ALL block courses scheduled during the mid-semester break (6-24 September) to being fully online. We appreciate this will be disappointing for many of you, however we feel this is the most prudent decision to ensure the safety of all our students and staff.

All block courses will be facilitated online via Zoom with details on CareyOnline. Your teachers will be in touch shortly with specifics. If you need support and would like someone to talk with, please do not hesitate to connect with any of your teachers, the student support team or Neroli (neroli.hollis@carey.ac.nz).

Peer writing assistants

Did you know that we have some second and third year students who are keen to support you with your assignment writing? Grace, Rebecca, Nicola, Jono and Susana are ready to help as peer writing support. And YES, they can do this in lockdown via email and/or Zoom! Contact the Library team if you have any questions or want to know more about peer writing assistance.

The team will help you with the process of writing and give you feedback on the overall structure of your work.

For an appointment, please contact the library (NOT the PWA team) as below:
For an extended one-to-one booking (30 minute or 60 minute options) emaillibrary@carey.ac.nz and include:
  • Your name and student ID number
  • Identify which assessment you are focussing on (course, assessment outline)
  • Identify if you want a 30 minute or 60 minute slot
Email the library with your preferred time and you will be given an appointment.  Confirm your appointment time within 48 hours. If you have questions, feel free to talk with any of the library team.

Worried about finances and study?

You will continue to get your regular Student Allowance and Student Loan living cost payments if you’re still enrolled and studying. Answers to questions about Student Allowance and living cost payments can be found on StudyLink’s website. StudyLink can also help over the phone and through MyStudyLink in most cases.

If you need extra help during this time you can find information about emergency assistance on StudyLink’s website.

Carey also offers emergency assistance through the Carey student support fund

The library staff are working normal library hours. Please be in touch if you need any resources to support your studies. They will do their very best to get these to you as soon as possible.

Carey Research Conference

Join us on 23 September as we explore research that matters in a free day conference featuring Carey thesis students, teaching staff, and a keynote address from Dr. Lynne Taylor from the University of Otago. Learn more about the day-conference and keynote address.

*We are in the process of moving the conference to a completely online format and are updating the registration form and schedule to reflect this change. These will be available by 1 September.

Open Day 5 October

We know you love Carey, so why not invite a friend along to our Open Day? There's the Bagel Breakfast, friends can attend chapel, sit in on a lecture, and meet your teachers, and share lunch with us.

Prayer

We pray that you may continue to know the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, and that will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Phil 4:7) as you continue your studies and support others in your bubble. Shalom.
