WEEK 4

The Other Side

I have been allocated 150 words for this offering. On the one side, this feels restrictive; on another side, it forces me to be concise. So, here’s the thing: Proverbs 18:17 has challenged me of late. In The Living Bible it reads, “Every story sounds true until someone tells the other side and sets the record straight.” Thus, when we hear a story about someone else, when we see the news, when we intuit something about another, when we’re tempted to label, when we read an academic text that argues for one position, when we wish to create universal truths out of our experiences, and/or when we wish to concretise our cultural insights as the norm for all, wouldn’t it be better to refrain from imprudence and first hear the other side/s of the story in order to develop more informed, ripe, and balanced views?

10 ESSENTIALS

Working on your next assessment? Don’t forget the useful information in the 10 Essentials (found on CareyOnline here).

Especially go over the HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY and HOW TO REFERENCE sections. See the Library team if you have any further questions!

TURN IT IN RESUBMISSIONS FOR LEVEL 4 AND 5 COURSE ASSESSMENTS

Carey, like many tertiary organistations, uses Turn It In to check submitted assessments for authenticity and academic integrity. Turn It In compares the submitted assessment with a large database of previous student work, online articles and journals and websites. It then produces a “similarity report” that highlights areas in the assessment where the text matches text from the database, and that could potentially be problematic.

At Carey, we want students to learn how to correctly use and reference original source material (journals, books, websites etc), and so we are now making the Similarity Report available for students in our Level 4 and core Level 5 courses so that Turn It In can be used as a developmental tool. This means you are able to submit your assessment, receive the similarity report, identify and address and problematic areas and then resubmit the assessment (after 24 hours). More information will be sent to students early next week.

Knowing how to read and understand the similarity report is vital – the Library will be holding a session to help explain this on TUESDAY 13th August. TIP SHEETS for students will also be available on CareyOnline early next week. If you have any questions talk to the library team or email library@carey.ac.nz.

CAREYONLINE COURSE INFORMATION

Please remember that a lot of your course material and information sits in CareyOnline – Carey’s Moodle Learning Management System. If you have not logged onto CareyOnline to look at your course information, please do this in the next couple of days (otherwise your teachers will be checking up to see that everything is OK!).

If you are having trouble logging in to CareyOnline please email Neroli (neroli.hollis@carey.ac.nz)
